I'm pretty sure we did this once and it failed badly because nobody would have maps to archive. I'm also pretty sure we have a lot of BF Hard drive space to hold many maps.
I just pmed the owner of this site to consider putting up a Map Archive v2.

A map archive is like a server. You can only load up your maps on this forum and other people can download it.
We need your support to help make it successful if you want a Map Archive.

Vote or die ;)

Lwek's Notes: Sorry for the long wait. Admins are very busy. Haven't gotten to it. Hope is running down.(Updated 11/26/04)

i think its a great idea so when we have peopel comeing to our site and they ask for a map they can just look for it on the archive and if they dont find it then to bad for them? (no) im shure most of the members would have what they might be looking for so then a member could just post all there maps in the archive(or soemthing like that)

sorrt for any spelling mistakes im a bad speller

it'd be good..but i'd say id have to see wats the limit of the size of the map? cuz if its a small size then i probably wouldnt be able to put my maps up cuz they all have wavs in it that r pretty big even though they compressed

I've got about 3300 UMS maps collected over the years and I'd be willing to upload them.

I'm all for it!
Just a quick idea; maybe, if we were really serious about this, we could have a domain exclusively for map hosting. I mean A LOT of maps, from ~ to Z. Ctoespotter is what I'm talking about. I have a lot of old-school maps as well.
Just an idea.

theres a problem here... with the multitude of UMS maps out there (not even counting different versions and/or spin-offs from the same map) there has to be some sort of quality check.

for example, i have many great Diplomacy and WW2 maps that defy comphrension ("How does he trigger those actions?!? Amazing!!!") or you have shitty maps like "Kill That Marine," "United States vs Canada," etc etc etc etc etc etc.

So, a dedicated team would probably have to sort through the initial overload of entries and these would probably have to be tested on SC:BW just to make sure Battleforums isn't firing blanks into the UMS archive mappage. Also, use common sense please when submitting. Some guidelines would work to prevent just any old person from submitting.

The best way I see in this is to differentiate the different styles of UMS maps into categories obviously... hm, like have a separate category for guarateed sweet maps that have been tested while have another massive category for untested but verified sweet maps and then another massive category for... other stuff i guess. then sub-categories underneath all that.

Though no UMS map maker, I'd be willing to lend a hand to the effort since I have so many good maps handy from mainly the Diplomacy, WW2, etc genre and with the sorting of the maps as well though not be able to test the maps since i have slow 56k.

some of my ideas...

I think that there should be a kind of rating system.

Like, when a map has 5 votes, and it's average is over 7.5 (example only), it gets moved to "Good maps" part.

While all newly submitted maps go into some kind of "Unchecked maps" part. And if a map has 5 votes, and average is below 2.5, it gets deleted from the server.

And a domain would own. www.*************.com?
