Manhunt - Rated R
The Globe and Mail

With the recent events of some film review board slapping Rockstar's Manhunt with a rating of R, the first rating that a film review board has ever given to anygame, due to the intense violence and theme of the game.

I am unsure whether the US has heard any of this, because I think the story is about Ontario, but I am sure news will spread quickly if it already has not.

Anyway, I think that this is a good idea. I don't believe that video games really influence what a person does, but I do believe that people shouldn't just have the opportunity to be exposed to all the violence just because they want to. If they want the game that bad, they can just ask their parents to pick it up for them. If the parents don't want them to have the game, bam, they don't get it. It gives them more control..

Thoughts?

the only way a video game can affect the mind of a person is if that person somehow looses grip of reality. i play video games all the time. i don't feel like blowing people away just like in a video game. so i guess it depends on your perspective.

I'd agree that video games don't influence you unless one of two things are true. Either the person is a moron or has lost grip of reality. It might be possible that an undeveloped mind could be influenced by a game, but, at the same time, they likely won't if thier parents are able to explain the facts of life to them.

I have heard of Manhunt, but only to the extent that it has an "M" rating here in the states. An "M" has, essentially, the same effect as an "R". You must be at least 18 years of age or older to buy it. I haven't seen that many good "M" games, and Manhunt doesn't interest me. That's just me, though ;)

No.

If you're a ****ing maniac, maybe.

Some people are rediculous, they will blame anything and everything on something just to use it as a scape goat for the inevitable truth.

this also brings up the subject as to why we have gun restrictions etc....

it all comes down to the famous quote

"guns dont kill people, people kill people"

if i were to lay down a gun (loaded on safety) and not even come near it. I am 100% sure the gun will not go off!

You are? I'm only about 99% sure. Why? If it's hot enough, the safety won't matter. Why? The gunpowder can, theoretically, go off with enough heat. There's also a chance that a spark could follow just the right path to ignite the gun powder. Nothing is 100%.

There's never 100% assurance in a man-made product, however. Though you can show clinical results above 99%, it wouldn't be by much, and real life situations can easily reduce that.

of course those video games cause violence. Most of those parents that buy those games for the kids are cluless to wat it is about.
wrong, if, in any case, the point of games is to be fun. lf killing is fun, then in any way, it should actually calm you down. Whenever l feel like l want to kill someone, l kill someone in a video game. For normal people, a game is an escape from reality. But when reality becomes a game, for maniacs who play Gta3 too much, thats where the violence comes in.

I don't think they do. You have to be pretty stupid to think "Hey, they do it in a video game, I guess it's ok to do it in real life!" You have to play video game all the time, have no life, and forgot about reality to go think something like that is ok. I seriously think people are making this a much bigger problem than it really is.

I do have a question about Violent Games -- and it applies mostly to Canada and Australia. Why ban a game just because it has blood, guts, exploding body parts, and excessive violence?

Canada banned Postal and Postal 2 from sale and import, and Austraila banned...an FPS who's name illudes me. Do they think that people are going to go out and emulate the insane -- purposely made overly so -- manner of Postal?!

Depends. My family has problems with competitive games, such as Halo or any sports game. After a while, someone gets pissed off, and it usually ends up with either A) Something being broken (brothers hand was the most recent thing) or B) Someone leaving the house for hours on end without any mention of going somewhere.

Do games like UT and Halo and CS make people wanna go out and shoot people? Doubt it, but there are some whackjobs in our society...

I think violent games can bring people to violence..Of course usually those people are already sick in the head. I think the whole rating system for movies and games is stupid. Children shouldn't be sheltered from a violent movie if they have interest in it.

They don't even enforce ratings on games, movies they do ut not games. I can just walk in and rent or buy a game rated M whenever I want. Diablo 2 is rated M and I honestly don't know why, except maybe a lot of bad attitude on bnet, but I don't think thats included in the ratings.
