Do Mercenaries still work the same as before?

As long as I can remember, people have said that if you buy a mercenary at a low level and have it level with you, every one of its stats will be higher than if you had just purchased it at a high level.

Is this still true?

the mercs in a5 have bash i think b/c they make that noise and a red thing comes out lol and they do mad dammage but i seem to like act2-3 mercs especially 2 because if u r a sorc and you give them insight poleaxe etc you get a cool looking aurora :) and you get VERY fast mana regeneration while the merc is alive if you are meleethen you should go with a cold merc in act3 so he freezes the guies same with a zon and most of the time they will have higher def than you lol especially if you put good armour on him/her

There is currently no benefit to leveling the merc yourself. Therefore, just hire a new one close to your lvl.

Thank you, Laoshi. You answered my question. :)

Hmm, now I don't know whom to believe... I asked several people in-game today, and all of them said that the merc 'still' ends up being more powerful if he levels with you.

that actually is true because i got a merc at lvl 80 and it had less strength then a lvl 74(only aobut 2-3) so i basically waisted a perfectley good merc for a higher level one

The Dry Heat!!!
Leveling a merc(from the pending difficulty) does not affect the stats. But if you get a merc in normal(whether you level it or not) it is going to have higher str/dex then one's gotten in Nightmare or Hell. Leveling a merc is really up to the player. A players merc is only as good as the gear the players give it.

I hope this better's your understanding of mercs.

I don't see the point in rebuying a new merc. All I do is cow it (I let it kill) by doing so you could get 2-3 lvls on a merc in 1 run if it survives. Once you can get a merc to wear final gear, it really makes no difference if he has more life then another merc in a different difficulty. If he is geared right and you dont die neither will he.
