If you close all your programs that may create lag and then play, it shouldn't be too bad. Just make sure IM Services, music programs, and other things like that aren't playing or being used when you play Diablo II and it should be nice. Also, you could turn sound off to see if it works any better that way. :)

try this

go into program files > diablo II > Video Test

skip the test and change the Direct3D: SiS (which it should already be on) to the 2D setting. Should make it run a bit smoother.

That will make it run smoother, but won't affect his internet connection at all.

D2 can be played very well on good 56k. If the 56k tends to slow down at times, you will lag, but it's still bearable, as long as you don't play HC.

until i moved back to moms (around last thanksgiving) i had played d2 on nothing but dialup... granted while i was at my dads i didnt have d2 (comp couldnt run it) so that was roughly...a year and ah alfago...2 years?

either way, back then it was completely able to work, granted i lagged a bit, and wasnt able to keep up in rushes, and when we were lvlin / questing a nd aboss died, i wouldnt have a chacne in hell to get an item.

but i was still able to become a very very popular dueler iln classic, and was able to keep up with the best....

then again, aol sux. i warn u to be careful, cause aol just recently tried to make me pay 400 bucks for that "free internet service" while i was at my dads. i used a trial disk, and every tiem i tried to disconnect, they woudl give me another month free... then after i move out dad tells me he got a 500 dollar bill, well i had to raise hell about that...but yeah

I have 56k dial-up with really shitty phone lines in my area and I'm usually able to rush my own characters with two D2s open and AIM open at the same time. Granted, I drop sometimes when I'm running two copies, and I can't do stuff with both characters at the same time, but running a single copy should work just perfectly.
