One thing I've noticed about some of the greatest movies to be released in our lifetimes, is many of the greatest never seem to have the right kind of advertising or movie titles.
Titles like "Fight Club", and "American Beauty" never really struck me as movies worth watching. "Another Teenie-bopper film" I used to refer to them as.
I was hoping some of us could try to compile a list of excellent intellectual or thoughtful movies. Ranging from depressing (but brilliant), to unique. Movies that many of us may not have seen for one reason or another, whether we don't know anyone that might've already seen something, or if maybe the movie was titled improperly.
To start us off, and give you an idea of what I'm looking for, here are some movies I've seen before, that I never considered watching until a friend forced me to watch it, to which I fell in love with by the end.
Try to give as accurate of a description as possible without giving away any spoilers!
Donnie Darko - Definately not a movie you'll understand while baked/drunk. Not a movie I'd recommend while in either condition either, as some scenes might ruin that feeling of bliss. Very thoughtful, and will leave you with more to think of once the movie's over, than you will while watching it. You are required to watch this if you wish to live.
Fight Club - Don't let the name fool you, but don't take it as something you might easily be able to follow. It will make you question what is and isn't reality in your own life.
American Beauty - Not your typical Reese Witherspoon film. This film tracks the lives of about four different people, all with extremely different views on life, all mingling with each other at one point or another. If nothing else, watch it for the bag scene, and the dialogue during it. This movie will make an impact on you if you haven't seen it already.
Requiem for a Dream - This movie should be renowned for the best "Shoot-Yourself-In-The-Head" depressing movie of our lifetimes. If you think your life's bad, this movie will put you to shame. Very weird, and best if watched with a friend (not girlfriend). One of the best soundtracks I've heard in a long time as well.
