Deathnote began spiraling down into mediocrity when L dies. Even if I liked his replacement, the story didnt just have the same punch.

I loved how deathnote always had those over dramatic scenes with the epic music playing, when all that was really going on was a guy writting down in a notebook, or two characters staring at each other. That was so well done it was almost funny. :)

whats it about?
A notebook that kills the people whose names are written in it, basically.

I just finished watching all of the 37 episodes, and it is alot better than the english dub, and whether the manga is better or worse than the show I have no jurisdiction with 'cause I haven't read the manga. Although... the show is extremely gripping for most of the beginning, then kind of dies down, and then comes up with a huge climax, then down again... 'n follows this method about 3 or 4 times throughout the show, which does get kind of annoying.

Japanese with sub recommended.

But yeah, very worth getting into.

I agree. L was awesome. Near was an ok replacement, but once Near was introduced the series was almost over. Death Note wouldn't be good without Light and L to contrast one another.

I dunno. The storytelling was boring. You had to really want it to let yourself get hooked on it. And that chick never got the righteous banging that she deserved.

In my opinion, they should have tried to cram the story in a 6 episode format, like FLCL.

whats it about?
It's about a boring, top-notch honor student named Light who finds a notebook which belonged to a death god. He then opens it and finds out about the rules it has:

Basically, if you write a name inside of it, the person dies in 40 seconds. But only if the person who writes the name in it knows or has seen a phyiscal description in his mind, this is to prevent the user from killing 5 people with that instance of the name.

And also the type of death needs to be specified, or the person simply dies from heart failure.

He then gets visited by Ryuk, the Death God who dropped the notebook into the human world. And tells him he can use it, but he isn't his ally (as he proclaimed that one day he will write his name in his).

Light then becomes crazed with the book's power and makes a goal: To kill off all the criminals, so humanity can live in an utopia of peace and he rules it as a God.

It's one of those animes that you have to be into to stay into.
