I am in need of help in the early early game of FF1...

i started playing then stopped now i am playing again.

I just got some crown from a cave and now need to know who to give it to.

Go north from that cave and give it to the king in the abandoned castle.

The king is really the vampire who, upon defeat, gives you Matoya's eye, which you give back to her for the potion to wake the elven king, yadda yadda, the item trading quest known as FF1 continues.
