this is a wild guess but throw away your Preferences folder under System folder. They will more than likely build back together. You may have an extension conflict. Unless you're under X.. then I don't know

Hope this helps

I had a similar problem a long time ago. It was actually my memory/rams. The brand was a K-Byte (cheap brand) and it turns out that my mobo (nForce 2 chipset) is very picky in quality when it comes to hardware stuff; nForce 2 chipsets tends to be more stable with brand-name quality memory (Corsair, Kingston, PNY, etc.).

You are probablt experiencing errors either your disk screwed up, file was corrupted, or your computer is crashing. I need your specs, especailly your PSU and your amp count. If your PSU is supplying low voltage on your lines, then you need to get it replaced. An Antec TRUEPOWER 480 or 500+ is all you need to fix that problem. Another situation could be your BIOS settings are messed up. All you really need BIOS is for is to change the voltage output to the DRAM and turning on Fast Writes so your graphics card can run under fast writes (at 4x). But sadly, your lack of information will give you lack of answer. SHOW SPECS!

that works because it fixes up the IRQ problems (hehe Plug n' Play saved the day). But still these things could be your culprit

1. Memory Leak (get MemTest or sumthing)
2. Virus
3. Insufficient PSU
4. Defective RAM
5. Windows corruption
6. Too many programs at once
7. BIOS screwed up

I am more aimed towards #3 on the problems. Tell me what your PSU watts and the amps on the 3.3 5 and 12V lines.
