Well, here I am, starting my color list making project with GIFs of all of the colors pasted into a nice word document of every tile set. Nasty job, that. Well, it just got worse. As I was making it, I noticed that every so often, the colors would change if I rebooted the map in Starcraft. Thinking that it was the 1 AM lack-of-sleep affect, I thought nothing of it.

But, it wasn't.

That's right, folks, not only does the tile set alter the color of most of those units, but the colors can be different upon EACH GAMEPLAY of the map. That's why Hunter-Killer or whatever's list on Campaign Creations said that color x was blue and green, but turned out to be black speckled with orange the first time you played it and a white the second time you played it.

But, fortunately for you, I'm in the process of making a color list accompanied with GIF images of a marine, zergling, flag, score bar, and leader board box. Eventually it will apply to every tileset, but as I have a life with school and scholarship applications and school activities and such, I will require some time to finish them all.

It will be by no means perfect. It will be decent, but nowhere near perfect, and may be missing some of the colors on the randomized ones. It will also take up a lot of space on those 486's and such that you find around every so often (got rid of mine five years ago, but I've met people using them on BNet before.) How much? I originally though 10 MB when completely done, but with all of the extra GIFs involved, it may take up to 20 MB. I've already filled my desktop with xxxColor.gif files, so I'm tired of saving each one as well, and have added them to an MSWord 2000 file in a list format. The list will probably be eight lists, one for each tileset.

I am...well, was...close to done with the Ash World color list, until I found out that I was not as sleepy as I previously thought and that the colors changed with each gameplay. After playing the game ten times, I have four different colors for number 98. I have no idea what the random color changing pattern is, although my only guess is that it is based off of colors from the terrain (as well as the tileset). I will probably tool around with the colors awhile, and gather most of the more common colors that pop up.

Expect the Ash World Color List sometime within the next week. Stuff gets crazy soon though, and I'll be getting college applications and all through the mail and, of course, there is always school. That stuff should eat away much of my time, but I will attempt to make more color lists for each terrain in the future. After this next rushed one, I'd expect another tile set of a color list every two weeks to a month, depending on free time available.

How will you get the color lists? I have no idea. It's not like I can post it as an attachment, with each one probably going to be over a MB unzipped. I will probably e-mail them to Virus and have him do the stuff to get them ready for downloading. I will work it out later, though, when I sort through the maddening random-color-change effect. I will probably mess with the terrain as well, to make sure that each terrain change doesn't add a new color and remove the old possibilities. But I have already done that once, and still ended up with some of the old colors upon gameplay.

But, just a heads-up for that color list and for your current inaccuracies with the others. Hope that nothing major happens to where I find out that accurately determining a unit color is impossible so that I am able to put out these lists.

And if my long essay was too much, heres a nice compact form for the blunt ones that hate reading:

Some colors randomly change each gameplay. Attempting to make eight new color lists with PICTURES included for all 256 colors on all eight terrains. Give me up to a week for the first one and two weeks to a month each for each of the following seven.

Oh, and here's a small GIF of what each little explanation of the colors may look like on my lists. Psycodelic madness, dude! Shows why words cannot explain the colors every time.

Wow, hats off to you. Maybe it has something to do with what terrain the starting location is placed on or something like that. Also, get some sleep, we can wait 'til tomorrow to talk to you. This is gonna make colors a lot easier, but you'll have no life.

Thanks though.

Eh, I don't have a girlfriend and most of my friends don't do very good stuff in their free time, and I don't exactly have homework because I do it all in class, so it's not like I do a whole lot anyways. Clubs haven't started up yet where I get to build those wierd science things that everybody turns their nose up at, so nothing in that area. No job yet either, since my parents want me to fill out scholarships instead, so, I get a lot of time to sit around and say, "What to do now?"

And nay, nothing with starting locations, because the colors randomly change each time I play the map, even without editing. And sleep? Sleep! Bah! I can go days without sleep, and have too--although driving like that is a bad idea--but dang school, gah! Hopefully I can get a good deal done tomorrow, since it's Labor Day.

Yeah InsaneWallaby knows that Drunken had done it. That's why Insane and I have worked on it secretly(I talk, he work. Isn't that nice?) We didn't want drunken to think that we copied him.

Drunken didn't give a complete compilation of every color and every tileset with PICTURES. And to me, words are not enough. His list greatly improved the current one, but I still want better, because, well I do. And Bolt Head, I only saw a compilation of 8 colors for each of the tilesets in PICTURES, not all 255 for each of the tilesets in PICTURES, unless somewhere in there is a giant zip file that I happened to miss.

Working with the colors is making me realize that they are actually more complicated than I once thought. Not only can they be a random color off of the tileset, but they can be so off of the terrain as well. And now, it seems that I get the same color for some color numbers every time I play the map, but when I reboot starcraft, things change on me again.

If you guys think that words are enough to express random color changes and such, so be it, but I'm still making my list as well as possible.

My list is to be done with a full--or as full as possible, considering the occasional randomness of colors--compilation of pictures, don't forget that. And unless you give me a link with every random color change included according to not only tileset but to terrain as well with PICTURES included for EVERY color on EVERY tileset, every "Drunken already did this" will not deter me.

And if you think words are good enough, explain to people who don't know in words the exact happenings of how the world trade center collapsed and debris fell all over a bunch of people and killed thousands. Explain to people who don't know the exact Mona Lisa picture in words. Explain to me the picture of a random 17-year-old male caucasian face that you saw on the street today. General idea? Yes. Exact picture? Never.

Unit colors are unimportant. Want more detail? Note what the scoreboard looks like after the game. Most should be yellow stars.

To have a "true" list you would have to master the GRP (or was it the units.dat) files. Each unit has "color section varibles" in it. You would have to map it out for each unit and use a paint program to illustrate it. You would also have to screen shot every StarCraft unit, and figure the mystery of the flag portraits (I discovered a few strange things about those flags but didn't include them in the list).

Oh, I almost forgot, you would have to list the colors for players over thirteen. Which would be hard because thier colors change when a GRP is loaded or in events like a player leaving a game. And, you'd probably have to do that for all eight tilesets as well.

Yea, quite true there Drunken. Don't think I could do that though, as I'm not that great at delving into stuff like that.

However, screenshots of every color along with many of the random ones would help though. Even though it wouldn't cover every single randomized possibility, it gives a basic idea of the possibilities. It would still be better than words.

And although unit colors aren't important on the programming side, I feel that most people pay more attention to the unit colors than the minimap colors and the score bars at the end. Why? Well, when I click Mr. Marine and tell him to shoot Mr. Zergling, I'm ordering the unit color to attack another unit color.

And what are those yellow "stars," as you refer to them? They don't look like stars to me...they look more like birds if you look closely, or perhaps a zerg style of the Star Trek badge thing.

And as you say, I am not making a "true" color list. I don't plan on it--anybody who actually does do something like that has too much time on their hands. Not to mention a screen shot of every single Starcraft unit would take up gobs of space. I think in GIF format my screenshots were about 70kb each...70x255x8...142800Kb. Thats 139 MB right there...don't know if anybody wants to actually give that much space to a screenshot compilation of colors...especially as it being an older game that takes up less space than the compilation itself. And thats if the colors didn't change, but they do. So, in other words, NASTY.

As for listing the colors for players over 13...I know there is Starforge and all, but who exactly plays with players over 13 on all of their UMS maps? Heck, I almost always stick with the basic 1-8 and let 9-12 be what they are preset to be.

And you would have to have the units facing the correct direction :). Preferrably the first frame in the iscript.bin files.

Players over thirteen are very useful... Some speed up the game, some are hostile, some are neutral, some have weird effects with map revealers.

Yes, some people might use those players, but what are the majority of units on the screen?

'Twill be a sad day when maps become so gobbed up with crud that players 13+are desperately needed to fill a map and outnumber units owned by players 1-8. Well, thats my opinion at least. Whatever happened to the maps like MTG v.Enigma where the color black was a revolutionary idea? Personally, a few things can be added in that use that stuff, but the best maps are and always will be (in my opinion) the simple ones with great trigger useage and great terrain layout that provide a decent challenge, not Sunken Defense 9Quintillion v.400billion. And sure, players 13+ may be useful, but in mass?

And besides, I don't care about colors for players 13+ because I don't use much of that stuff myself and originally started this for my own useage, but decided that giving it to the public would help them as well. I'm not much of a person who prefers to horde their special goodies back in the hidden folder with a password in a remote section of their windows\system folder.

Both Master Virus.

Hint: Use sprites. Sprites of units are always presented in the first frame of iscript.bin.

I am currently exploring trig files and uncompressed map scenarios. I may release a "spec sheet".

EDIT: How the hell do I unregister my name? I want to leave this place.

InsaneWallaby has stoped the color list due to the lack of support he's gotten from Battleforums. He has also left Battleforums due to the lack of support he's gotten from Battleforums. He will come back here once in a while and check on stuff.

DrunkenWrestler, just leave if you don't want to stay here. Your name will go inactive after a while. But if you do leave, we will certainly miss you.

Goodbye, DrunkenWrestler, although I have absolutely no idea why you are leaving.
