Alright, hopefully I'll get to finish typing this whole freaking message before my power goes out again...

Anyway, the problem might be that some other process is using up your computer's mic. Try this:

1. Click Start > RUN and type in MSCONFIG. Under Startup Selection, tick Selective Startup and uncheck Load Stratup Items.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Check your mic. If it works, open MSCONFIG again and re-enable your startup items (or re-tick Normal Startup), and then try to find and get rid of the program that's using your mic. If it doesn't work, re-enable your startup items (or re-tick Normal Startup), stand up, and go to the nearest computer store where you can buy yourself a sound card. Any cheap one will do. I had to buy myself one; my onboard mic jack died too.

Are you 100% sure it doesn't work in anything else?
-Make sure your mic is in the proper jack. Sometimes the colors don't always match up right so just to be on the safe side try it in different ones.

If you want a new soundcard you can pick up a good SB Audigy for under or around $80 from >Here<. But before you buy a new sound card, I would suggest also posting this in the Tech Forum.

Meh... if you want a sound card, you should be able to get one for ten to twenty bucks. If you want a quality one, get an SB Audigy ZS Gamer for $130 at Best Buy. It comes with five games, including Halo and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield.

No, I mean. As an example; My mic jack is pink. Salmon pink. But it goes in the bright orange socket. Trust me, just try some different ones.

If most of your sound works but your mic jack doesn't, then it's probably easiest to get a new one. The onboard mic jack on my PC doesn't work at all anymore, so I went and got myself a new sound card. Get either a sound blaster for quality or, if you're looking for something a bit cheaper, this thing. They're both at Circuit City.
