Battle for Wesnoth

Pretty well done for a free game. The game is a turnbased strategy game set in a fantasy setting. There are 6 races; an elf race, human race, undead, dwarfs, dragons, and orcs. You start with a leader unit in the beginning of each skirmish(campaign is different) that has the ability to recruit units as long as he/she/it is standing on a keep. Each unit costs money to produce and some have an upkeep.

To make gold to support these units, you need to capture small villages by moving a unit onto its square(hex) this ends the turn for the unit that lands there. Villages do two things, they produce gold and heal any unit that occupy it. You do not need to keep units on a village to retain leadership, however all an enemy unit has to do is land on the square and it takes over the village, so protecting your villages becomes important late game in supporting your army.

Units fight by moving adjacent to enemy squares and you mouse over the unit you want to attack. Most units offer two choices of attack Usually its either a melee attack or ranged but sometimes a unit has two different melee types as opposed to one. most of the units in the game will deal more/less damage based on the time of day(there are also units that have no difference). Units also use an exp system. they gain exp by fighting(more if they kill a unit), when a unit obtains enough of xp, it will upgrade into a stronger unit(sometimes you have the choice between two different upgrades).

The main drawback imo is the combat system. Units are given a chance to hit based on the land-type they are on. Sometimes you'll have four units around one unit all attack it and only hit it once. this gets VERY frustrating especially when you have a unit that would level by hitting the other once. I've reverted to the previous turn multiple times trying to hit the unit ONCE. After a while though i got over it and the game is pretty enjoyable.

Basically: dl the game and have fun.

I've heard it's a great game, and a friend plays it IRL. I've just never tried it yet, maybe I will now.
