I dont use it but it is helpful it's cheap and all you have to do is click the upgrade and forget that you did it.Sometimes i forget to buy something from the vault and it is's bad when i dont have units to carry some

I use backpack only for orc as Healing Salve is the only item I may need.

First off backpack is not an item that you buy. The only possible reason to research it may be to get more ivory towers onto some units so u can do one hell of a tower push on the opponents if your heros have their backpack full.
