6800 GT = x800 PRO

you cannot compare 9800 vs 6800 ... the 6800 will win.

I went with a BFG 6800 gt ( http://www.bfgtech.com/6800GTOC.html )

for $400 it is a hard core gamers card. I love it and it performs awsome in any game. especially doom3. I looked at both sides of things, and i went with the 6800 becuase of reviews and because i talked to a bunch of hardware guys who said the 6800 is a major leap in gaming cards for nvidia. And its 1 ghz ddr3 memory freaking pwns!!!

Also, you may want to hold of and wait till the x700 is released. its a good card to compete with the stripped down 6800 ($300) becuase it has similar core speeds. if you want to overclock, i would not go with eVGA. instead get the BFG cards. they are pwnage.

The ATI X-800 series is still very expensive. The 6800 does beat the 9800 though, I think it is supposed to be close to the X800 Radeon series. To be honest I haven't looked into the new line of cards yet, too much money for me with the X800 coming in at close to 700$ Canadian.

Sicloan, it's PCI-E for PCI Express, lol. Do not use the term "PCI-x". This is PCI-x a slot that has been around for nearly 4 years: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/technology/pci-x-enablement.html

As for the 6800 Series vs X800 series, the 6800 Series is pretty much the "card of this year" (it's in Maximum PC latest mag of September 2004). ATI won't be able to make a comeback until next year with their R520.

The X800 and 6800 series, at the moment, are more or less equivalent. Right now, no one has a computer that is fast enough to effectively run a 6800 GT or x800 XT. Supposedly, from what I've read, the 6800 is more powerful, but it's hard to say just yet.

I have heard PCI-X PCI-E and PCX i prefer PCX but if your going to be technical go with the PCI-E like hybrid said.

And yes the x800 and 6800 are fairly identical, and no system can truly equal its performance because no system takes advantage of DDR2 memory.

the x800 is better basicly because its ATI....new games like half life 2, CS:S, Doom3, and others have been optimized specificly for ATI video cards.

The 6800 Series slaughtered the X800 in Doom 3 (Link), and with the SM3 enabled at Farcry, 6800 just owns the whole game, even the 6800nu can kill a X800 Pro with 10 extra fps.

CS:S and HL2 is pretty much fair: if you have AA and AF enabled, X800 owns, but without any, the 6800 will do pretty well.

I just had to mention it.:)

@TheHybrid you are totally right with your comments about the 6800. in CS:Source its probably a dead even thing. Especially since they have no shaders yet in the beta. I have 6x AA and 16x AF on and i get 60-70 fps in full combat with my 6800gt.

@Nearby-Stalker

Your are a very ignorant person.

6800 and FX series has the shaders built in, thus the reason why it won the Doom3 Benchmarks (yes, the FX is more tech. advanced than the 9800 series, but nvidia didn't realise games that will take advantage of this won't be out till a year later).

The HL2 engine is old already (the game was supposed to be out a few years ago). Usually, it would be the 6800GT that would own a X800 Pro and it would be the X800xt PE that will own a 6800U in these kind of games.

For that comparison the vanilla 6800 is better then the 9800 PRO. However it is $100 more. Right now the 9800 PRO is the best mid range card on the market. However with the 6600 GT and vanilla coming out in the next month or two, there will be a new crown.

Edit:

Didn't realize the 9800 PRO was a 256 mb version. That about evens it out.

Some things you might want to consitter before getting a new card. Is that all newer cards will be switching to PCi-X which has faster transfer speeds. If you want a highend card, wait. AGP is dieing with PCI-x now in the market.
Uhh... wtf? AGP is alive and well. It will be at least a generation or two before PCI-E becomes mainstream.

i meant it is dieing in the sense that all highend cards will not use AGP anymore. Soon AGP cards will be rare just like PCI cards
Not soon. It will be at least two generations before people start forgetting about AGP,
