Will it only play downloaded songs from the iTunes shop or w/e, or can it be used just like all other players (i.e. Winamp and such)? I got a gift certificate and was debating whether or not to use it or not, because if iTunes can't play all my other stuff, I don't feel like downloading the music to re-rip it...

I have an Ipod and I do use Itunes; it is capable of playing song files that aren't from the Itunes music store. I think that Apple would have prevented this had it not been that a lot of people import music from their CD's to their Ipods (Even though 90% of the music that isn't from the Itunes store is probably illegal music) and the fact that people would have neglected purchasing an Ipod.

However, if you are thinking about using Itunes just for playback capabilities (Ie, playing music but not using it for an Ipod) then I think you would be making a mistake. Itunes main purpose is to import music from the library to the Ipod, not be your mainstream music player. Winamp is by far the best :) .

iTunes rocks, I use it as my mainstream player, and it suits me fine, I have no problems with it...I love my iTunes
