Anti early tank or gaurd rush

Sometimes early in the game, people will start pumping out gaurdians or tanks to wipe out the poor protoss D. I was wondering what early strats that you guys nkow of to counter that. Late in the game its easy, because you have PSI storm and all that, but early what do you do?

Don't have your defence consist of entirely Photon Cannons. Use offensive units as defence.

Just get zealots, goons and high templars and dont build a single cannon unless they mass lings. Kill them before they get guardians.

One time. 2v2. I built about 7 cannons and that was it. They are a waste of money to be built everywhere. I just get most of them guarding my peons.
