1) This shouldn't be in this forum. So could a moderator please move this to the appropriate forum(tech).
2) This isn't a question. AMD Ath > Pentium; they were on top of the proccessor tech since the thunderbird.
3) A 1.7 gig AMD proccessor is more powerfull than a pentium 4 (2.0)
4) Please specify what AMD chip you are referring to. AMD = company P4 = chip. AMD > Intel (They make the pentium chips).
5) The AMD chip sets tend to be better than the Pentium sets but as I said you haven't elaborated on the specific chip.

Yeah, an Athlon XP 3200+ (2.2 GHz) performs about the same as an Intel Pentium 4-C (3.2 Ghz) CPU. You get more bang for your buck with AMD. :)

Actually if you want performance you might want to check out Intel's Xeon line of processors. They'll cost a pretty penny but you'll get results.

Those are server processors my friend...unless this guy is wanting to run duallys, he will just be wasting his time.

There are good points to both processors really, but if you are going for gaming, I would suggest AMD. Pentium 4's are really good for other stuff though, the things that require a lot of CPU instead of GPU. AMD processors seem to have a thing for working best at backing up the GPU in graphics...I used to know the real answers for this...but thats all I can remember. I personally know many representatives for AMD, Intel, ATI, nVidia, and Tom's hardware, so I get some pretty interesting information from time to time. For instance, I was one of the first people other than the AMD developement team to see the Athlon 64 :) Being Tech Support for http://www.millionmanlan.com has its perks ;)

P4s fry easily and require good PSU and cooling to keep from overclocking. AMD have low clockspeeds but do not fry as easily.

Maybe a poll should have been thrown onto this thread? :D

Pentiums don't fry easily, Athlons (K6 and K7) do. Pentiums are design to produce less heat. Athlons shows that you don't need more processing power for better perfomance.

The Athlon 64-bit (K8) chips are even cooler than the P4 Extreme; they are built to be smaller than the P4 (Similar size to the AMD Opteron Processor) and a perfomance similar to that of the Athlon-XP (K7) series (low processing speed, yet better over-all perfomance). They also have 64-bit capabilities, which is required for 64-bit programs ( which aren't even release to the public yet except for the Beta Windows XP 64 Edition)

To answer the dudes question, with very little money to spend i would rather get this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat....asp?EdpNo=719647&Sku=CP2-A64-2800&CatId=1177

Or if you are willingly to spend us$700, this is the best processor AMD has to offer right now:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat....asp?EdpNo=705212&Sku=CP2-A64-FX53&CatId=1177

Both require a motherboard supporting different cpu sockets; the first one is a socket 754 and the second one is a socket 940.
But its up to you to decide.
