A Backdoor-able Process?

As I was getting rushed.. I was just hitting keys as I went "overseas" to Act III. I noticed that I am able to open my inventory/quest log/character stats or anything of that nature while Diablo II waits for me to insert my CD for the movies... I don't do much hacking per say, but, theoretically, could someone take an item out of the inventory and then, when diablo refreshes and you are in Act 3, the item is still there?

Any with experience get what I'm saying?

I know what you're saying because when it asks if i wanna see the cynematic thing, if i push escape to say no itll bring up the Options Save and Exit and Cancel menu when it loads.
